City Council Sees Fair Wages as a Fair Trade-Off

Here’s a stop-the-presses/Tweetable moment: A civic body stands up for fair wages. The Austin, Texas, city council voted last week that construction workers should be paid at least $11 an hour.

Of course, this is a political body, and in politics nobody gets something for nothing. Or just because it’s the right thing to do. It was standing room only when the council met to debate a proposal to require new businesses to pay construction workers at least $11 an hour and domestic partner benefits if they get tax incentives from the city.

Opponents, of course, said the requirement would cause construction costs to increase by 20%, but the council voted for it anyway.

But this jury is still out: Travis County commissioners must yet address the fair wages issue.
